Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola crowned at Best FIFA Football Awards

Lionel Messi and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola have been crowned player and manager of the year at the Best FIFA Football Awards.

Messi guided Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar to become a world champion with his country for the first time in his trophy-laden career, although his 2023 award win does not include his performances at the tournament.

Guardiola, meanwhile, led City to a historic treble as the English side won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in the 2022-23 campaign.

Elsewhere at the Best FIFA Football Awards, England star Mary Earps and Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman were named best women’s coach and best women’s goalkeeper respectively.

City star Ederson was named the best men’s goalkeeper and there were a total of six players from Guardiola’s team in the Team of the Year.

John Stones, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland were named in the team along with a trio of Real Madrid stars – Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Thibaut Courtois – while Kylian Mbappe and Messi were also included.

Messi beat Haaland and Mbappe to the best player award while Guardiola came out on top in the manager’s award over Luciano Spalletti and Simone Inzaghi.

This year’s Puskas Award, handed to the player who scored the most impressive goal, was picked up by Guilherme Madruga of Brazilian club Botafogo.

Aitana Bonmati, meanwhile, was crowned the best women’s player after helping Spain to World Cup glory.

The FIFA Fair Play Award was handed to the Brazilian men’s team for wearing an all-black kit in solidarity with teammate Vinicius Jr after he suffered racist abuse in a La Liga match.
