Manchester United Player Ratings vs Aston Villa: Jonny Evans Shines While Rasmus Højlund Struggles

Evans was the best player on the pitch

Manchester United drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford tested Emiliano Martinez early on in a half of very few chances. United were forced into a change at half-time after Harry Maguire hobbled off. Matthijs de Ligt came on for the injured Maguire and Victor Lindelof was also introduced in place of Noussair Mazraoui.

The second half followed a similar pattern with neither team able to create any clear-cut chances. Bruno Fernandes hit to crossbar with a free-kick but the game ended goalless.

Here are the player ratings from Villa Park.

Andre Onana

Did not have a save to make in the first half and beat away an effort from Youri Tielemans in the 56th minute. Seemed to be time-wasting. 6

Noussair Mazraoui

A much-needed improvement on his midweek performance during a tepid first half. His half-time withdrawal was seemingly enforced. 6

Harry Maguire

Defended stoutly and unfortunate to be booked for a tangle with Ollie Watkins. Got hurt late on in the first half and had to go off. 6

Jonny Evans

United fans chanted his name on three separate occasions in the first half. Brilliant in the tackle and on the ball. He was the best player on the pitch. 8

Diogo Dalot

Dubiously continued at left back but had little grief from the wasteful Leon Bailey. A massive block from Jaden Philogene late on. 8

Christian Eriksen

Booked in the third minute for a cynical and deliberate foul but was tidy on the ball in his sixth start in seven games. 6

Kobbie Mainoo

Had a similar first half to Eriksen – including a yellow card – and battled on. Was the last player to be substituted. 6

Alejandro Garnacho

Started on the right wing but he was at his liveliest when he moved to the left in the first half. A little too erratic when he got the ball. 6

Bruno Fernandes

Struggled to get going during the anodyne first half but hit the crossbar from a free-kick in the 69th minute with what was United’s best effort. 6

Marcus Rashford

Forced saves from Emiliano Martinez early in the first and second halves but got booked and then committed a bookable foul he got away with. Was soon substituted. 6

Rasmus Hojlund

Was an upgrade on Joshua Zirkzee in midweek but not today. Got nowhere with or without the ball and came off at the right time. 4

Subs

Matthijs de Ligt

Entered the game at the pause and it helped that Villa were not at the races. 6

Victor Lindelof

A respectable performance on his first appearance in 64 days. 6

Joshua Zirkzee

As blunt as Hojlund. 5

Antony

Showed pace and enterprise to draw a vigilant save from Martinez. 6

Casemiro

Last man to come on. 6

Manager

United played competently in the first half and the defensive changes were vindicated. Made proactive changes that were understandable. 6
