Young boxer breaks Conor McGregor’s record at UFC

Ian Machado Garry, a young Irish fighter, is on a journey to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Conor McGregor’s legacy at UFC.

Ian Machado Garry recently broke Conor McGregor’s long-standing record in the world’s biggest martial arts tournament when he defeated Michael ‘Venom’ Page at UFC 303. This was Garry’s 8th consecutive win under the UFC banner and the 15th of his career.

After a long amateur career, the Irishman made his debut and recorded a series of 7 consecutive victories at Cage Warriors, Europe’s most prestigious MMA tournament. He won the tournament’s welterweight championship, before being noticed by the UFC and officially signed a contract in 2021.

According to Irish MMA statistician Andy Hickey, Garry’s latest win gives him the longest winning streak for an Irish fighter in the UFC. Previously, Conor McGregor had seven straight wins before being defeated by Nate Diaz at UFC 196.

McGregor’s rise began with a win over Marcus Brimmage in his debut, followed by a win over Max Holloway, but he had to withdraw due to injury. He bounced back by defeating Diego Brandao in a historic showdown in Dublin, before knocking out Dustin Poirier and Denis Silver.

He was then scheduled to face Aldo for the title at UFC 189, but when the Brazilian withdrew due to a rib injury, he faced Mendes instead. McGregor knocked out Mendes in the second round and went on to win the featherweight title at UFC 194, before losing a late-schedule bout with Diaz.

Young Ian Garry has taken a slow path to the top of the welterweight division, climbing the rankings over the course of his three-year career. He debuted with a win over Jordan Williams, then beat Darian Weeks and Gabe Green in his first three fights.

Ian is a true fan of Conor McGregor, and has repeatedly spoken out to defend his idol against attacks aimed at him over his decision to withdraw from the match with Michael Chandler.
