Manchester United drew 3-3 with Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.
United took the lead early on when Marcus Rashford beat Diogo Costa at his near post, and the Porto ‘keeper was beaten again at his front post by Rasmus Hojlund with 20 minutes played.
Porto hit back through Pepe shortly after and they were level at the break thanks to Samu Omorodion’s powerful header.
Samu doubled his tally and handed Porto the lead early in the second half. United pushed for an equaliser but their challenge was made tougher as Bruno Fernandes was shown a second yellow card for a high boot. A late Harry Maguire header rescued a point.
Here’s how the players rated at the Estádio do Dragão.
Andre Onana
Unfortunate with the first goal as he had to repel Noussair Mazraoui’s header towards his own goal. One of the few to emerge with some credit. 7
Noussair Mazraoui
Inexplicably caused the comeback by heading at his own goal in an aerial duel. 5
Matthijs de Ligt
Days after his positioning was dissected by Jamie Carragher, De Ligt was all over the place for Porto’s opening goals. Came off in the 78th minute. 3
Lisandro Martinez
Caught off guard when Pepe made it 2-1 and Martinez was vulnerable to aerial hoiks from kick-off. Outpaced by Pepe. Substituted at the same time as De Ligt. 4
Diogo Dalot
Both first-half goals came from down Dalot’s side and so did Samu Omorodion’s early second-half strike. Should have switched to right back weeks ago. 5
Casemiro
A tepid performance back on his old stomping ground. United were never going to shore up their defence with Casemiro back in the side. 4
Christian Eriksen
Fed Marcus Rashford to put United 1-0 up and got on the ball enough but did not have a profound impact. Until his corner was converted by Maguire. 6
Amad
Made a dynamic start and his infield runs flummoxed Porto but went quiet after the hosts scored and struggled to get back into the game. 5
Bruno Fernandes
United fans supportively chanted Fernandes’s name and he started off calmly but got booked and then reduced himself to pot-shots at goal before getting sent off. 4
Marcus Rashford
Created his goal all by himself and then created a goal for the returning Rasmus Hojlund. Went off at half-time, presumably through injury. 8
Rasmus Hojlund
Scored on his first start of the season and celebrated with physio David Binningsley, who oversaw his recovery. Had little to go off after Porto made it 2-1. 6
Subs
Alejandro Garnacho
Tried and saw a late shot tipped wide. 7
Joshua Zirkzee
Came on to provide a goal threat and didn’t. 5
Antony
Was unlikely to bail out United. 4
Harry Maguire
Came on to freshen up a stale defence and made the difference in attack. 7
Jonny Evans
Came on with Maguire. 5
Manager
Maguire was not fit enough to start but it was remiss to retain the same back four that was so porous against Tottenham. That was compounded by Casemiro’s recall. United’s game management was as bad as last season and some of the substitutes inexplicable. 4
