‘Three midfielders’ – Real Madrid icon points out lineup solution when Mbappe joins

Real Madrid have done everything in their power to finally complete a move for Kylian Mbappe, who is set to leave PSG at the end of the season after half-a-decade of flirting with the Spanish outfit.

Los Blancos will have a problem at their hand when he joins, though, as they already have a host of superstar talent at the club deserving important starting roles.

As such, the former Real Madrid icon Guti has spelled out a solution for Madrid, suggesting that they could take one midfielder out of the equation to fit in Mbappe.

Guti’s ‘three midfielder’ setup

Speaking to El Chiringuito TV, Guti was asked what will happen to the the team when Mbappe joins.

“Speaking for myself, when they brought in the Galacticos I did not like it because I know I was going to play less,” the creative midfield powerhouse said, remembering his time with Madrid in the 2000s.

He did suggest a solution to fit in Mbappe, as well, saying, “I think Rodrygo will start next season. Real Madrid can consider playing with three midfielders.”

Carlo Ancelotti has largely fielded a 4-3-1-2 this season with Jude Bellingham playing in the hole behind Vinicius and Rodrygo. This essentially converts into a 4-3-3, with the Englishman assuming centre-forward responsibilities.

Guti’s suggestion makes sense on paper since Mbappe can take on the no. 9 role, with Vinicius and Rodrygo on either side of him. The Frenchman can then often swap with the left-winger to create space.

Better than the Galacticos?

Guti was also asked whether this team could compete with the Galacticos side previously assembled by Florentino Perez. The Spaniard seemed confident in his response, siding with the current generation.

“In terms of players, this Real Madrid is better than the Galacticos. It was difficult for us to win during the Galactico Madri. Many were going forward and few came back to defend.”

Apart from Mbappe, Madrid are also eyeing a move for Alphonso Davies and Leny Yoro in the summer, hoping to cover all cracks in the team ahead of the next season.
