Meghan Markle once made a three-word remark after she appeared to upstage the late Queen Elizabeth at an official event.
In November 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sus𝑠e𝑥 had already embarked on their first official tour to Australia and attended Remembrance Sunday – a key fixture in the royal calendar.
During their bombshell docuseries on Netflix, Harry & Meghan, the Sus𝑠e𝑥 couple spoke about how their boosted popularity at the time put them at odds with the rest of the royals.
Prince Harry said: “The issue is when someone who’s marrying in, who should be a supporting act, is then stealing the limelight, or is doing the job better than the person who is born to do this.
“That upsets people. It shifts the balance.
“Because you’ve been led to believe that the only way that your charities can succeed and the only way that your reputation can be grown or improved is if you’re on the front page of those newspapers.”
The duke added: “The first time that the penny dropped for her, M and I spent the night in a room in Buckingham Palace after an event where every single member of the family had been, including the [late] Queen.
“The next morning, they’d set up breakfast. And on the front page of The Telegraph, Meghan.”
The duchess then revealed her three-word reaction and said: “I went, ‘Oh my God’.”
“But it’s not my fault’.”
At the time, the Sus𝑠e𝑥es were dominating the front pages of several publications, which appeared to overshadow other royal events taking place.
