Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly been left “hurt and angry” after Prince William’s “appalling betrayal” following his meeting with Donald Trump, a source has reportedly claimed.
The Prince of Wales held a meeting with the US-President elect in France after they both travelled to Paris for the ceremonial reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral following a devastating fire in 2019.
Mr Trump gushed over William, telling reporters: “He’s doing a fantastic job.”
Now, according to a source, the Duke and Duchess of Sus𝑠e𝑥 have been left “shocked” and “terrified” following William’s meeting, as the pair are known to not get on well with the new US President.
The insider told Closer magazine: “This cuts deep on so many levels and feels like an appalling betrayal for Harry and Meghan. Prince William appeared to get along with Trump very well.
“Of course William was fulfilling a professional role but Trump has been so vicious towards them and of course William is aware of that, so Meghan and Harry can’t help but think he could have discussed it with them first.
“The fact Harry can’t even get William to pick up the phone is insulting enough, but now they feel very hurt and betrayed that their feelings appear not to have been taken into consideration.”
Harry and Meghan did not publicly endorse any candidate during this year’s US election, but Meghan has been previously been open about her support to Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, who lost to Mr Trump.
The source added: “The whole situation has triggered a storm of emotions for Harry and Meghan. They’re hurt and angry and genuinely quite shocked because, for all their issues with William, they still believed his politics and beliefs were more in line with theirs.
“Now, the whole thing has become terrifying. Trump has made it clear he’s out to punish them and Meghan and Harry fear that his admiration for William could make him more inclined to do so.
“Meghan and Harry had to know William would eventually shake hands with Trump; for the sake of international relations, he pretty much has to put on a polite face, but this cosiness is unsettling for them.”
The US-President elect has previously hinted that he could intervene regarding Prince Harry’s visa “if he lied” about taking drugs in the past, following a row that sparked after conservative think-tank The Heritage Foundation requested the Prince’s visa records be made public due to his revelations about past drug use in his memoir Spare.
Meanwhile, the source added that Prince William remains unfazed about the couple’s “outrage” and will carry on with his duties like “business as usual”.
They said: “William doesn’t care at all, he’s very clear that he was simply doing his duty being a professional and he finds it pretty telling that Harry and Meghan would manage to make it about them.
“‘He’s not going to apologise for doing his job and he’s certainly not going to worry about how what he does to protect his country will be perceived by them, they need to grow up already!”
