The unique English country house that once belonged to singer-songwriter and producer Kate Bush has hit the market for £11.5 million (US$14.4 million).

 

The “Wuthering Heights” and “Running up that Hill” singer—who recently had a resurgence in popularity due to the latter featuring in Netflix series “Stranger Things”—owned the home in the village of Theale, Berkshire, from the mid-1990s until 2011, when she sold it to the current owners, according to listing agency Strutt & Parker, which brought the home to the market earlier this week.

Set on the River Kennet, the property, known as Shenfield Mill, dates to 1800, and the remains of the original paper mill are still a feature of the more than 22-acre grounds. Standing on the red brick bridge next to the mill, the river can be seen running through the waterwheels that once powered the paper production until the 1870s.

Next to the mill is an outbuilding that Bush used as her dance studio, while another property—now a three-bedroom bungalow—was a recording studio and it’s where she recorded several albums, including 2005’s “Aerial” and 2011’s “50 Words for Snow.”

The current owners, who couldn’t be reached for comment, embarked on a major restoration of the property, making significant repairs and maintenance to the mill, reconstructing the river banks and adding a private hydro-electrical scheme to the waterway that uses a giant Archimedes screw—which uses a spiral to lift water from a lower to higher elevation—to power the entire estate.

They also removed an old, concrete fish pass and replaced it with a natural version that enables fish to travel up and down the river more easily, and the property is now a haven for wildlife.

The red-brick main house was renovated, too. Its footprint was expanded and a contemporary glass extension was added, which has views across the gardens and the river, complete with its steel and tile footbridge.

The four-bedroom home also has a drawing room, a relaxed sitting room, a study, a library, two kitchens—one main and one prep—underfloor heating and air conditioning.

Besides the former recording studio turned bungalow, and Bush’s dance and rehearsal studio, there is also a two-bedroom cottage on the grounds.

The owners are selling the mill to move closer to their children and grandchildren, according to the listing agents.
