Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are putting their gorgeous 1920s-era mansion in New York’s Westchester County up for sale
The 79-year-old Wall Street actor and the 54-year-old Chicago star are listing the riverfront property for $12 million, according to the Wall Street Journal; pictured in September 2021 in LA
‘When I purchased our Irvington home I knew our family would share many happy times here, and we have!’ Zeta-Jones gushed in a statement
‘Now that both our son and daughter have left the nest it seems like the right time to sell,’ she added
Michael and Catherine share their son Dylan (front center, 23) and their daughter Carys (R, 21) while the China Syndrome actor also has an older son, 45-year-old Cameron Douglas (not pictured), from his first marriage to Diandra Morrell
The A-list couple’s mansion has an illustrious past, as the land was once owned by the Matthiessen family of sugar merchants, according to the book Irvington (Then And Now) by Anne Marie Leone and Judith Doolin Spikes, via the Wall Street Journal
The current estate is a portion cut out from larger estates that were combined in the early 20th Century
In 1902, Conrad Matthiessen bought a neighboring 50-acre estate owned by the then-deceased Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of the iconic jewelry company Tiffany & Co.
The current property that Douglas and Zeta-Jones own was later carved out from those larger estates
Stunning images provided by Compass realtor David Turner show that the home’s new owners will have plenty of green lawn to gaze upon
There are around 130ft of frontage between the house and the river
It also includes a 100ft back terrace looking out upon the river
The space would be an ideal spot for entertaining in the warmer months
It also has convenient awnings to cut down on the sun and heat in the daytime
It wouldn’t be a celebrity mansion without a pool, and the riverfront property doesn’t disappoint with its indoor pool
But rather than a massive, gaudy pool, Douglas and Zeta-Jones have a more reserved rectangular indoor pool that wouldn’t be out of place in a spa
Zeta-Jones purchased the home in 2019 for only $4.5 million, so she stands to make a hefty profit on it
A spokesperson for the actors told the publication that they keep separate real-estate portfolios
Douglas and Zeta-Jones’ mansion, where they recently hosted a fundraiser for President Joe Biden, features eight bedrooms
It has a modern-looking red-and-white dining room with shiny waxed wood floors
Many of the rooms are styled in minimalist white with dark wood accents
Other rooms are accented with striking scarlet walls
The mansion has multiple sitting areas, and French doors give the mansion abundant natural light
Another enticing aspect of the mansion is that it is move-in ready
Compass real estate agent David Turner notes being move-in ready is a rarity among prewar mansions of the area
He said Douglas and Zeta-Jones had extensively renovated the mansion
However, they were careful to preserve much of its original character
Its present state balances modern tastes and luxury with classic elegance and history
The home is near the village of Irvington
The couple previously lived not far away, near Bedford, which is a celebrity hot spot
The nearby village includes plenty of restaurants and shops
It also features a train into New York City, so the new owners will never be far from the Big Apple
The color scheme of the mansion changes in an ornate study and library area
They feature lighter brown wood-paneled walls and an ornate fireplace and mantle
The library features a striking spiral staircase to access upper cabinets, and it has an opulent arched entranceway
One of the bathrooms features tiles and a marble fireplace and bathtub
a smaller kitchenette departs from the other rooms with striking black tiles
The kitchen features white tiled walls with tasteful dark brown and gold accent
It has a convenient nearby breakfast area
One of the bedrooms featured dark wood on the elegant bed posts and end tables
Many of the rooms feature rugs to expose the elegant hardwood floor
The mansion, which overlooks the Hudson River, was built in the 1920s. It is located near New York City in the village of Irvington
