Chido Obi-Martin has continued his impressive start in Manchester United’s academy by registering his fourth goal in as many Under-18s games since his summer arrival.
The attacker fired in a 15-minute hat-trick for the side on his ‘home’ debut in October’s 6-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest, and managed to find the net again with a cool finish from the angle in the team’s 3-0 win over Everton on Saturday.
The 16-year-old was snapped up from Arsenal in July but had to wait until the final day of September to see his move approved by the Premier League. Obi-Martin is tipped for a bright future, having netted an astonishing 32 goals in 21 Under-18 matches for the Gunners.
His form saw him feature for the club’s Under-19s three times and Under-21s twice. Arsenal failed to convince him to pen fresh terms and the talent was consequently approached by United.
The teenager, who turns 17 at the end of November, made his debut for Norway Under-18s in September, scoring on debut. He featured for United’s under-21s against PSV Eindhoven in the Premier League International Cup on the day the first team beat Leicester 5-2 in the League Cup.
Obi-Martin’s goal against Everton this weekend came after just six minutes. He was replaced by Gabriele Biancheri, another hot prospect, on 71 minutes. Tyler Fletcher, the son of United hero Darren, came off at the same time having started the match.
Twin brother Jack has trained with the first team this season and has made the last three Premier League matchday squads. He was on the senior bench for the cup win over Leicester, too. Obi-Martin is being backed to follow his footsteps under incoming head coach Ruben Amorim.
Further goals from Jim Thwaites and Bendito Mantato after Obi-Martin’s opener for the Under-18s on Saturday kept the side top of the Premier League North table, having won all nine of their fixtures. They have netted 43 goals and conceded just four during those fixtures.
