Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned Ruben Amorim that Viktor Gyokeres’ form in Portugal may not necessarily translate to the Premier League if he chooses to target him next year.
Gyokeres has been in phenomenal form for Sporting since arriving at the club from Coventry City. Remarkably, he has bagged 63 goals in 66 appearances for the Lisbon club which has led to speculation that Amorim may try to sign him for the Reds considering their lack of goals this season.
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have scored a combined three goals for United this season but Amorim has insisted he will not try and sign any Sporting players in the January transfer window. While Gyokeres is not a guaranteed target for the Reds, he is one of the favourites to be targeted next year but Ferdinand warned his form may not transition to England.
“He knows England albeit the Championship when he was at Coventry but he has gone to a new country and he has absolutely set the world alight, he has been phenomenal,” Ferdinand explained on TNT Sports. “There is a variation in his goals, absolute powerhouse of a kid.
“Great attributes, the profile of the kid is something that you think would be able to work in England. But again, I would not be getting too carried away because you want to see him deliver that.
“We have seen many players do well in other leagues and then they come to the Premier League and fail to deliver. I am not saying he would do that, I am quite confident he would be able to deliver but you need to see him do that.
“It is sometimes men against boys when he plays.” Amorim led Sporting out at home for the final time on Tuesday evening as they took on Manchester City in the Champions League.
