Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and striker Rasmus Hojlund have sent their support to Mason Greenwood after he scored in Marseille’s 2-1 victory over Nantes at the weekend.
Greenwood has been in good form since arriving in France during the summer. The 23-year-old has scored seven goals and bagged two assists in ten matches for his new club, with Marseille sitting just six points behind Ligue 1 leaders PSG in the table.
Greenwood hadn’t played for United since January 2022, when he was sold in the previous transfer window. He was arrested in January 2022, and charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew their cooperation.
United held an internal review and claimed they believed Greenwood hadn’t committed the offences with which he was charged, but attempts to reintegrate him into the United squad last August were dropped after a fan backlash, and it was made clear then that his Old Trafford career was over. Despite his time at the Theatre of Dreams coming to an end, it appears the forward still holds some friendships at the club.
Celebrating the victory over Nantes, Greenwood posted a selection of celebration images onto Instagram, which both Fernandes, Hojlund, and young striker Ethan Wheatley ‘liked’. Former United stars Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Alvaro Carreras, Brandon Williams, and Shola Shoretire also ‘liked’ the post, while Nottingham Forest winger and ex-United man Anthony Elanga replied with a GIF from the NBA which mimicked Greenwood’s celebration.
Greenwood’s up-turn in form comes at a time when his England career remains up in the air. According to The Sun, the winger holds an interest in switching his allegiances to Jamaica, who are now coached by former United assistant Steve McClaren.
But before agreeing to that switch, Greenwood would like to meet with new England head coach Thomas Tuchel to discuss whether there is any way back for him in the FA’s set-up. It is believed Greenwood’s camp sees this as a long shot; however, they would not want to close the door on the Three Lions until they have spoken with the German.
