The prototype device is the result of collaboration between Japan’s leading telecommunications companies, including: DOCOMO, NTT Corporation, NEC Corporation and Fujitsu.
The alliance announced the results of successful testing on April 11, with the companies revealing prototype devices that could achieve speeds of 100 Gbps indoors on the 100 Gigahertz (GHz) band and outdoors on the 300 GHz band. The tests were conducted over a distance of 328 feet (100 m), according to a statement from the group.Testing 6G devices in Japan (Photo: Gizmochina)
Although the achieved speed is quite impressive, 6G is still in the testing phase on a single device and is not yet commercially viable. In addition, the network technology still has shortcomings that need to be improved.
5G is the current gold standard for connectivity, with theoretical maximum speeds of 10 Gbps. However, actual speeds are often much lower, averaging around 200 megabits per second (Mbps) for T-Mobile users in the United States.
One of the reasons for such slow speeds is that 5G uses higher frequency bands. While higher frequencies mean faster speeds, they also have limitations. This limits the distance the signal can travel and reduces the penetration of the waves.

6G will use higher frequency bands than 5G. That means it will be harder for 6G devices to get the frequencies they need for faster downloads. Even the tests were conducted at distances of just over 328 feet (100 meters), for example. So factors like walls and even rain could significantly disrupt the 6G signal.
While the transition from 4G to 5G focused on increasing data capacity for activities like video streaming and mobile web browsing, 6G networks could open up entirely new possibilities.

With increasing speeds, 6G could enable capabilities like real-time holographic communication and immersive virtual and mixed reality experiences.
However, there is still a lot of work to be done before we can enjoy these technologies. Most importantly, infrastructure, such as overhauling cell towers and new generations of phones with 6G antennas, is needed before the technology becomes mainstream.
