Frank and Barbara Sinatra’s Malibu Beachfront House Sells for $9.55M

A beachfront house in Malibu, California, that was built and owned by the legendary singer Frank Sinatra and his fourth wife, Barbara, sold for $9.55 million within just a few months.

The 5,824-square-foot home with seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms came onto the market for $12.9 million in July 2019. The price was reduced to $11.5 million in January and found a buyer in about two weeks, listing records show.

The sale price represented a 26% discount from the original ask. According to the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the sale, the buyer is reportedly comedian, producer and actress Mindy Kaling, whose reps did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Kaling, 40, is best known for acting, producing and writing The Office (2005), Inside Out (2015) and The Mindy Project (2012-17).

The transaction has yet to appear on public records, so Mansion Global could not confirm the buyer’s identity.

The Sinatras bought the lot on the star-studded Broad Beach Road in 1990 and commissioned designer Edward “Ted” Grenzbach to build their dream beach house. Over the decades, they entertained many celebrities at home, including Bob Newhart, Don Rickles, Dick Van Dyke and Gregory Peck, according to Barbara Sinatra’s autobiography, “Lady Blue Eyes: My Life with Frank.”

Frank and Barbara Sinatra were married from 1976 until his death in 1998 at age 82; Barbara died in 2017 at age 90. Following her death, the property was transferred—per property records accessed through PropertyShark—to a trust under Robert Marx, Mrs. Sinatra’s son from her marriage to Robert Oliver.

The home has ample space for entertaining, including a state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen, an indoor-outdoor bar, a patio overlooking the ocean, and a swimming pool with spa, according to the listing handled by Leonard Rabinowitz and Jack Friedkin of Hilton & Hyland, and Chris Cortazzo of Compass.

The interior living includes a massive master suite with vaulted ceilings, a private terrace, dual bathrooms, a steam room and a hair salon, according to the listing.

Mr. Corazzo, who also represented the buyer in the deal, declined to comment. Listing agents at Hilton & Hyland did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
