The Duchess of Susđ eđ„ made a number of public âthinly veiled threatsâ just days before Queen Elizabeth II died, royal observers have said.
On August 29, 2022, The Duchess of Susđ eđ„ did an interview with The Cut – a New York fashion magazine – with many interpreting her words as threats towards the Royal Family.
As well as talking about her and Prince Harryâs departure from the Firm in 2020, which at the time sent shockwaves across the nation and within the family, Meghan also hinted that she could speak out on private family matters in the future with nothing in place to stop her.
Meghan told The Cut: “It’s interesting, I’ve never had to sign anything that restricts me from talking. I can talk about my whole experience and make a choice not to.”
When asked why she hadn’t shared her whole experience so far, she said she was “still healing”.
She said: “I think forgiveness is really important. It takes a lot more energy to not forgive. But it takes a lot of effort to forgive. I’ve really made an active effort, especially knowing that I can say anything.”
Her comments were analysed at the time by Sunday Times Royal Editor Roya Nikkhah, who said on True Royalty TV’s The Royal Beat that Meghan probably hoped her “thinly veiled threatsâ would concern the Royal Family.
Nikkhah said: “That phrase, ‘I have a lot to say until I don’t’ and, ‘I’ve never signed anything that restricts me from talking’… there was a very strong inference there.
“And, of course, the reminder that she keeps a journal, and [her] revelation that, ‘when we came back to Windsor, to Frogmore Cottage for the Jubilee, I rediscovered my journal that Iâd left there’ – I was astonished to discover that she had left a highly private diary behind in Windsor, rather than taking it back.
“She’s mentioned a couple of times in the last year or two that she kept a journal, and I think there is a very strong inference that Meghan could write her own memoir.â
Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8, 2022, just nine days after the interview and when the couple were already in the UK for an engagement.
Meghan did not fly with Harry to Balmoral where the late Queen died, however she attended the funeral later that month. Despite fractured relationships within the family, Meghan also joined her husband, Prince William and Princess Kate on a public walkabout outside Windsor Castle just days after the late Queenâs death where they greeted grieving members of the public.
She has not visited the UK since, with Prince Harry flying back to his home country alone for both his father King Charlesâ Coronation and to see the King after his shock cancer diagnosis. Meghan has also since gone on to share stories of her time in the Royal Family in the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, which was released in December 2022.
She is yet to release a memoir, with her husband Prince Harry releasing his bombshell memoir Spare in January 2023.
