Scarlett Johansson isn’t afraid to admit her losses.

In the M&M’s Super Bowl 2024 commercial, the actress stars alongside NFL Legends Dan Marino, Terrell Owens and Bruce Smith – some of the greatest players who never won a Super Bowl. Johannson knows what it’s like to be an “almost champion,” as she’s lost two Oscar nominations. In the clip above, the group brainstorm a new way to get their hands on a runner up prize.

“Only Super Bowl winners get a ring, right? Wrong! M&M’s presents the Almost Champions: Ring of Comfort,” Marino says at the start of the clip. “It’s actual science.”

The former Dolphins quarterback then explained what the hilarious rings are made of. “First we took comforting, M&M’s peanut butter and compressed it into real diamonds,” he says. Scarlett Johansson M&M’s Super Bowl commercial.

The M&M’s characters make an appearance with the yellow one chiming in, “It doesn’t taste like peanut butter.” The brown M&M responds scornfully, “Don’t lick the bling.”

“Then we polish them with the sighs of those who almost won a Super Bowl,” Marino quips. Smith and Owens are seen breathing over the jewelry. “Almost,” Smith says.

Johansson then appears as the red M&M holds the ring in her face. “I’ve lost two Oscar races!” she says. The red M&M adds: “In the same year!” (Johansson was nominated for an Academy Award for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in 2020.) In response, Johansson gives the candy character a disapproving look.

The red M&M closes out the ad on a silly note as he hands Johansson one of the rings. “Don’t tell Marino I gave you this,” he says.

When it comes to her appearance in the big game commercial, Johansson said her favorite part was that it encourages everyone to have fun, whether you win or lose.

“It’s playful and comforting at the same time, just like one of my all-time favorite Mars candies, Peanut Butter M&M’S,” she said in a release. “I hope the fans enjoy watching the ad as much as I enjoyed making it.”

M&M’s full, 30-second ad is set to air in the first quarter of the big game. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII, airing on CBS on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
