The Kansas City Chiefs are arguably the best team in the NFL. They also have arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play in the league, Patrick Mahomes.
Even with a less-than-stellar wide receiver corps, Mahomes still managed to lead his team to assss second consecutive Super Bowl win. The Chiefs were the first team to accomplish this goal since the New England Patriots accomplished this in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
With back-to-back Super Bowl wins, Mahomes has already been levied as being the greatest to ever play quarterback alongside Tom Brady. Though Mahomes certainly has many more years to come, it’s hard to argue against his innate abilities.
That is why it was very odd when NFL.com’s Top 100 player rankings came out, and Mahomes was not even in the top three. The annual player survey handed Mahomes a No. 4 overall rank, behind 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, and Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Though many pundits were rightfully upset about Mahomes’ placement on the list, he had the perfect response to his ranking.
When speaking to reporters, Mahomes simply stated, “It is what it is.”
To be honest, there is no need for Mahomes to further address the ranking, or even take umbrage with the number he was given. He quiets any disrespect, real or perceived, by winning championships.
Mahomes continues to let his actions on the field speak for him, and though the players in the NFL voted him as No. 4, he remains a master of his craft.
Mahomes also had a similar reaction when the Chiefs’ divisional rival, the Las Vegas Raiders, broke out a Kermit puppet that had his curly hairstyle and Mahomes jersey.
The pure mockery might have upset other people, but Mahomes essentially shrugged it off and stated it would be “taken care of.” Taking care of it means Mahomes and the Chiefs will ensure they beat the Raiders two times in the 2024 season.
Mahomes is not someone who allows the outside noise to affect how he plays. He can certainly shut down doubters once again in 2024 if the Chiefs make it to the Super Bowl for a third year in a row.
No NFL team has been able to accomplish a Super Bowl three-peat, yet the Chiefs are already favored to do that. If Mahomes helps lead the team to a third straight title, there might be no one ranked higher than him on the NFL Top 100 in 2025.
