FRISCO – Want your 15 minutes of social-media fame? Pretend to break a news story about the Dallas Cowboys.
CeeDee Lamb is coming off an All-Pro year and has made it clear he might miss training camp in Oxnard as a result, a holdout that reflects his desire for a new contract extension.
The Cowboys are aware of his desire to join the ranks of the NFL’s highest-paid wide receivers … and they haven’t much argued against the validity of that.
And just in time to fill the time between now and the July 23 camp reporting date comes a “report” that doesn’t bother framing itself as a “rumor.”
It boldly states: “CeeDee Lamb will request to be traded if the Cowboys do not offer him a new contract worth at least $32 million per year. He wants to be at least the second highest paid WR in the NFL.”
The news source? Someone on Twitter named “Pretty Ricky,” who bills himself as “the people’s NFL insider … beat writer’s hate him!”
We are as hesitant to dismiss any claim of having information (especially in this social media age) as we are of believing someone who “breaks stories” in a way that seems intent on being comedic. … but more than half-a-million NFL fans have now seen the tweet.
In any event regarding the validity of this maybe-information, it is worth noting that the Cowboys have brought this upon themselves. They’ve talked of “waiting for falling leaves,” a level of patience that has done nothing but increase the market price for players of Lamb’s ilk – starring, of course, Justin Jefferson’s new $35 million APY deal in Minnesota.
So a Lamb trade demand? We don’t dismiss it. We don’t tout it. We just disseminate it.
