Men in Black, commonly referred to as MIB, is a line of American science fiction action comedy movies directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. The films are based on Lowell Cunningham’s Malibu/Marvel comic book series The Men in Black, which was initially inspired by a conspiracy theory regarding UFOs. Men in Black, the first movie, was out in 1997. Men in Black II, the second movie, came out in 2002. Men in Black 3, the third movie, came out in 2012, and Men in Black: International, the spin-off, came out in 2019. Each of the four films was produced by Amblin Entertainment and distributed by Columbia Pictures in association with MacDonald/Parkes Productions.
Men in Black is the first film in the series. The film follows the exploits of Agent J and Agent K, members of a top-secret organization established to monitor and police alien activity on Earth. After Agent K hand-picks James D. Edwards from the NYPD and recruits him for MiB, the two Men in Black find themselves in the middle of the deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist who has arrived on Earth to steal an energy source of unimaginable power. In order to prevent worlds from colliding, the MiB must track down the terrorist and prevent the destruction of Earth. It’s just another typical day for the Men in Black. The film was released on July 2, 1997, to positive reviews and grossed $589 million worldwide.
