Local Philanthropists Purchase a Ritzy South Florida Penthouse for $17.3 Million

It’s not Billionaire Bunker, but it’s still pretty spiffy! After seeking a pied-à-terre in South Florida to replace their $87 million Indian Creek mansion that just went to Jeff Bezos, retired banker Javier Holtz and his wife Andria have settled on a swanky Piero Lissoni-designed penthouse at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach.

In late May, the couple’s 10,000 square foot, seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom home went up for an off-market purchase, and Bezos acquired it along with two other waterfront estates that the billionaire founder of Amazon recently purchased for a combined sum of approximately $234 million on the prestigious man-made barrier island known as Billionaire Bunker. The Holtzes, in turn, paid $17.3 million for an entirely furnished home that takes up the top floor of the structure. It is an eight-story luxury condo and villa complex that is presently home to American Eagle CEO Jay Schottenstein, MLB Hall of Famer Mike Piazza, and Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber.

The sale was an LLC connected to White Plains, New York residents James and Amy Dieterich, as first revealed by The Real Deal. Though it’s still around $2 million more than the Dieteriches paid for the property more than three years ago, back in early 2021, the opulent pad was originally offered for almost $20 million in December 2023 and was acquired by the wealthy donors at an astounding discount.

The Holtzes will have nearly 6,000 square feet of living space once they settle into their new four-bedroom, five-bathroom apartment. This space includes high ceilings, sleekly designed interiors with blonde hardwood floors, floor to ceiling glass walls, and a wraparound balcony with expansive views of Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Glitzy features include access to a climate-controlled garage and a 40-foot boat slip, as well as an office, a custom wine cabinet, a built-in BBQ station, and a pool and spa bordered by a street art mural.

Among the other highlights is an entry foyer with slatted walls and a bright sculpture on a pedestal. There’s also an expansive dining room, a family room, an eat-in kitchen with an island and premium appliances, and a glass-lined great room with a formal seating area that links to an entertainment area on the opposite side via a custom TV console. A luxurious walk-in closet, an enclosed wet room with a soaking tub and a rainfall shower, and a separate sitting area with access to a private terrace with a hot tub are all features of an extravagant master suite.

The building’s many amenities, which come with a hefty $12,753 monthly HOA fee, are the cherry on top. These include a private marina, a spa and fitness center, a meditation garden, a roof deck with a pool and cabanas, and a concierge.

Holtz, who was born in Cuba, served as chairman and CEO of Marquis Bank until it was acquired by Professional Bank in 2020. Son of the late Abel Holtz, a multimillionaire founder of Capital Bank and a Miami civic leader, and his widow Fana, Javier and his wife Andria are well-known for their support of neighborhood institutions such as the Jackson Health System, which bears his father’s name for a children’s hospital.

Grace Dieterich of Coldwell Banker held the listing for Penthouse 1, and Andrew Holtz and Nancy Batchelor of Compass represented the buyers.
