A new contract for Bruno Fernandes is not a priority for Manchester United but the club would be open to a renewal if he stays beyond the transfer window.
Fernandes has attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Inter Milan this summer amid uncertainty over his future, partly fuelled by the player.
The 29-year-old said on the Old Trafford pitch in May: “I will be here if the club wants me to be a part of the future. If for some reason they don’t want me, I will go.”
United do not plan to negotiate any new contracts with existing players during the transfer window and Fernandes is tied to the club until 2026, with the option of an additional year.
Fernandes won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the third time last season and he is widely considered to be the club’s best signing since Robin van Persie in 2012.
Despite the Portugal international’s consistent quality, Fernandes is below Casemiro and Marcus Rashford in United’s list of highest earners.
United anticipate Fernandes’s agent, Miguel Pinho, could approach them about a new deal later this year if Fernandes is not sold.
Fernandes signed a new contract in March 2022 but the length of his stay was only extended by a year as he banked a significant salary hike after an influential two-and-a-half years.
United would have been vulnerable to selling Fernandes had they not won the FA Cup and qualified for the Europa League but the chances of him leaving have subsided thanks to their participation in European competition next season.
Fernandes’s valuation is still comparable with the £67.6million United negotiated with Sporting Lisbon to sign him in January 2020.
