Jessica Chastain has made the decision to sell her apartment in Midtown’s extravagant Osborne building, which offers a view of Carnegie Hall, after almost nine years of ownership. The seasoned actress and producer is requesting $7.45 million for the home, which was formerly owned by renowned conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, as first reported by The Wall Street Journal. Ellen Kapit and Cathy Taub of Sotheby’s International Realty are the owners of the listing.
Documents reveal that the Tony-winning composer Adam Guettel received $5.1 million in 2015 from the Zero Dark Thirty star and her longtime husband, Italian fashion executive Gian Luca Pasi De Preposulo, for the 3,800-square-foot apartment located on the fourth floor of the 19th-century co-op, which is hailed as one of the city’s first significant luxury apartment buildings. Prior to it, Bernstein and his family lived there from the 1950s until the early 1960s; he composed the West Side Story score in a smaller, rented apartment one level below.
The four-bedroom, four-bath condo was renovated by the couple while they worked with the design firm Carrier and Company. It has many period aspects mixed with more contemporary elements including elaborate wall coverings made using Ralph Lauren fabrics. A standout feature is the living room, which has restored mahogany paneling, plaster crown molding, carved doorways and windows, an antique chandelier, a wood-burning fireplace, and a “very special” bay window with Tiffany Studios-made leaded glass transoms.
A formal dining room with lacquered wainscoting and built-in window seats is revealed via pocketing doors beyond, while an eat-in kitchen with quarter-sawn oak cabinetry, a rolling ladder, a colorful butcher block-topped island, and high-end appliances is situated in the eat-in area. There are two more bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a bedroom that has been turned into a library with bookshelves. The main bedroom is spacious and features a copper-clad soaking tub, a wall of mirrored closets, and a tiled bathroom with dual vanities, a dressing area, and a walk-in shower.
Thanks to a hefty $7,000 monthly HOA fee, the star’s apartment also comes with a ton of perks, such as a newly refurbished gym, storage spaces, a 24/7 doorman, and a manicured roof terrace with views of the city and Central Park.
The 47-year-old Californian is purportedly selling because her family—which includes two kids—needs additional room, according to WSJ. Fortunately, she already owns a large brownstone on the Upper West Side that she paid $8.8 million for in 2019 and a waterfront shack on Shelter Island, New York.
