The Madden NFL 25 cover athlete will be revealed on Tuesday as the game prepares for an August 16th release. The Detroit Lions have had two players appear on the cover of the iconic video game, Hall of Famers Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders.
Johnson graced the cover of Madden 13, while Sanders was on it for the 25th anniversary edition in 2013.
Though it is unlikely that a Lions player will be on the cover this year, there are four players on Detroit’s roster that are good enough to be featured on the cover: Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and tight end Sam LaPorta.
Since entering the league in 2021, St. Brown has established himself as one of the most versatile wide receivers in the NFL. The 2023 First-Team All-Pro primarily plays in the slot but has also shown the ability to excel on the outside.
St. Brown hauled in 119 catches for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and also had over 100 catches and 1,161 yards in 2022. The USC product’s popularity and ascension into being one of the top receivers in football would make him a fantastic Madden cover athlete.
Aidan Hutchinson has been everything Detroit hoped he would be. The No.2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft posted 11.5 sacks and 101 QB pressures in 2023 and was selected to his first Pro Bowl. Hutchinson’s high motor and relentless pursuit have made him one of the best edge rushers in the NFL, and his growing popularity amongst fans would make him a fascinating choice for a Madden cover.
While he’s only played one season, Gibbs showed he’s immensely talented and would be an ideal choice for a Madden cover because of the well-deserved hype surrounding him.
General manager Brad Holmes’ decision to spend a first-round pick on Gibbs didn’t sit well with many fans, but the 22-year-old showcased why he is a valuable offensive asset.
The No.12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft had an electric rookie season, as he tallied 1,261 yards from scrimmage (945 rushing) and 11 touchdowns and was selected to the Pro Bowl.
Last but certainly not least, we have tight end Sam LaPorta, who emerged as one of the best tight ends in the NFL in his first season. LaPorta’s 889 receiving yards in 2023 was the fourth-most in NFL history for a rookie tight end, and his 10 touchdowns ranked second.
