The hype is real.
If you walk into my apartment, you’ll notice a few things. I love design, and I think I have quite the knack for interior things. I’m proud of my home, because many of the pieces you’ll find were actually stooped (IYKYK). You’ll also see that I work in fashion, as I have a closet overloaded with clothes, but perhaps the number one item of clothing that I have in abundance is…shoes.
My shoe collection is large, to say the least. You’ll find an array of white sneakers (a go-to of mine), kitten-heel slingbacks that I’ve worn to death (because they are so cute and practical!), and plenty of ballet flats because comfy, low-to-the-ground shoes that still look stylish are a total must-have for living in NYC. What you won’t see just yet (keyword here being, just yet) are mesh ballet flats, but they are en route to me as a type. I finally purchased a pair this weekend, and though I had zero buyer’s remorse, seeing Jennifer Lawrence’s recent outfit only solidified my decision to buy a netted style.
Lawrence was photographed at the airport in a cool, comfy travel look that I’ll be stealing for my upcoming flight to Italy later this month. She wore all of her go-to staples-because J.Law knows what she likes! Including baggy denim that look refined but are still comfy thanks to the roomy silhouette, a billowy button-down, and the ‘It’ shoe of the season: mesh ballet flats.

Lawrence’s mesh ballerinas were a poppy red, which seems like a contrasting idea, because this particular footwear trend is kind of, sort of all about looking nearly invisible. In fact, we’ve even deemed it the squint-to-see shoe style, so it seems like an interesting choice to go with a poppy hue. But TBH, I’m obsessed, as I think it only gives the hole-y flats more dimension, looking especially cool when paired with blues.
The nice thing about the mesh flat trend is that you can choose how all-in you want to go; if you prefer to keep it subtle, go with a beige pair that remains a bit more camouflaged. But if you want to let everyone know, “hey, look, I’m wearing mesh shoes!” follow Lawrence’s lead and go with a in-your-face color or even a classic black for high contrast.
If Lawrence’s history of wearing this shoe trend isn’t enough to convince you, stay tuned once I receive my pair and report back. Hint: I’ll probably be wearing them to death, too. So, you might as well try your own pair before it becomes impossible to get your hands on them.
