Fans have been left amused by seeing how Paul Scholes reacted when Steven Gerrard recalled winning zero Premier League titles.
A clip resurfaced of Gerrard and Scholes doing punditry together back in the days of BT Sport’s Champions League coverage in 2017.
Gerrard never lifted the title in his Liverpool days – with his slip against Chelsea an unfortunate lasting image from his career – while his Manchester United counterpart won 11.
It was almost imperceptible, but fans detected a shift in Scholes’ facial expression which they believe betrayed his true feelings when Gerrard talks.
‘For someone who hasn’t won the league, for me, I see it more as clever management, tactically spot-on if you go on to win it,’ Gerrard said.
Meanwhile Scholes and Rio Ferdinand sat in silence – but the camera zoomed in on the former’s twitching visage.
Was Scholes… smirking?
‘Paul Scholes’ little smirk after Gerrard says he has zero Premier League titles always kills me man,’ wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter.
‘Man almost let his evil side win,’ one said.
‘He’s such a villain cause him and his mates are the reason Gerrard doesn’t have a Prem,’ another wrote.
‘Didn’t know it was possible, I actually love Scholesy more now,’ one commented.
‘One of the greatest TV moments of all time,’came the declaration of another.
One user said: ‘He had to fight demons just to not laugh out loud there.’
If Scholes was battling inner demons, he did well to hold it together and nodded towards the end as if to signal respectful agreement with Gerrard.
Ultimately it is impossible to know what the ex-midfielder was thinking and the fact that the clip was shared by a Manchester United fan account – and subsequently commented on by many more – offers the view that it is all wishful thinking from their fanbase.
