A private island less than 30 miles from New York City, off the coast of Greenwich, Connecticut, is headed to the market later this week for $25 million.
Spanning around 1 acre, Farwells Island sits in the Long Island Sound and is “one of only a handful of private islands in Greenwich, let alone Connecticut, that have their own bridge,” explained listing agent Brett Smith of Brown Harris Stevens, meaning convenient and quick access to the mainland.
The island comprises a seven-bedroom main house, a recently renovated three-bedroom guest house, a well-equipped boat house and a climate-controlled glamping tent.
The property has served as a multi-generational compound for the same family for 44 years, and has been a place “where the children and grandchildren came back every summer,” Smith said. It provides “a little bit of that bygone era,” he added. The owners couldn’t be reached for comment.
Though second homes tend to be further afield, here “you can have your family compound—a miniature Nantucket—but you’re still 40 minutes from New York.”
There’s also deep water dockage for multiple boats, watercraft and water sports; a private beach; a five-car garage; piers and stairs into the water; and multiple formal and informal outdoor entertaining areas, from patios and terraces, to dining areas and a spot for a clambake.
“When you think about some of the most important factors in real estate being exclusivity and uniqueness, this has both,” Smith said.
And of course, there are the views, which span more than 60 miles across the water to the shores of Long Island. “It’s an island, so every single room has water views,” Smith said. “There isn’t a bad view on the property. …If you love the water there’s nothing else better.”
