A Closer Look at Lizzo’s opulent Grammy Awards outfit

Congratulations to Lizzo, who performed at last night’s star-studded Grammy Awards and won Record of the Year for her blockbuster song “About Damn Time.” Lizzo was nominated in five categories as well. The celebrity need several looks for an event of this magnitude. She really went for it, selecting dramatic silhouettes that were more lavish and spectacular than the next, with the assistance of renowned stylist Patti Wilson. Wilson tells Vogue that Lizzo’s desire for a dramatic appearance for the evening served as the main source of inspiration. It’s a huge night for her, so she wanted every outfit she chose to wear to truly capture that essence of her: grand, sumptuous, significant, and authentically her.

Lizzo and Wilson looked to Dolce & Gabbana to bring their visions to life. Wilson says Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were the perfect creative partners. “The inspirations we were drawing from, and the feelings we wanted to evoke, all felt inherently Dolce & Gabbana from the start,” says Wilson. “The opulence, the attention to detail, the uniqueness of fabric and materials, and one-of-a-kind pieces—it all brought Dolce & Gabbana to mind. It felt like the perfect collaboration for Lizzo’s big Grammy night.”

Lizzo started her big fashion night out by walking the red carpet in an orange silk Mikado opera coat that had thousands of silk flowers stitched all over it. For extra shape, she wore it over a silk corseted gown adorned with Swarovski crystal mesh. “It felt really special and appropriate for the bright shining star Lizzo is,” Wilson says of the red carpet look’s vivid color. To accept her Record of the Year honor, Lizzo changed into a couture outfit with sculptural shoulder sleeves and a ruched garment made of silver lamé.

The singer performed her songs “About Damn Time” and “Special” in a custom black satin bustier dress, which was complete with voluminous sleeves and corset adorned with Swarovski crystals. “It embodied confidence, sensuality, and power,” says Wilson. All of her backup dancers were also dressed by Dolce & Gabbana in complementary black and gold ensembles.

Such a fashion spectacle is to be expected from Lizzo, who always brings her fashion A-game to any Hollywood event she attends. That’s what makes her a dream client for Wilson. “So much of fashion is having fun and feeling inspired, and inspiring others,” Wilson says. “And that’s something I think Lizzo always stays true to. It’s why people really admire her as a style icon.”
