When Marcheline – who had been married to Jolie’s father, Jon Voight, from 1971-1989 – died from ovarian cancer aged 56 in 2007, it came as a huge loss to the actress, who had much in common with her mother.
But just a few years later, those similarities took on a more sinister tone when Angelina discovered she had inherited the faulty BRCA1 gene.
Doctors told the mother-of-six that she had an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer and a 50 per cent chance of ovarian cancer as a result of the gene.

Highlighted again at last night’s ceremony, her speech – which was broadcast via video link – was so moving that Brad Pitt kissed her in a gesture of love and support.
During the speech, Angelina was clearly moved as she said: ‘My mother loved art. She loved film,’ the 38 year-old said. ‘But whenever it had meaning she had a point in telling me that is what a film is for.’
She continued: ‘And to stand here today means I did as she asked and if she were alive she would be very proud. So thank you for that.’
