A bet is a bet… except when it isn’t.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes appeared to be on the losing side of a wager this week when he posted a picture of himself on social media wearing the head portion of a Texas Longhorns mascot costume.
‘A bets (sic) a bet…’ Mahomes captioned the Instagram post in which he’s seen recreating Longhorns fans’ ‘Hookem’ hand signal. ‘Okay cool #Hookem.’
By tagging his ex-Chiefs teammate Shane Buechele as well as his wife Paige – both of whom attended the University of Texas at Austin – Mahomes appeared to indicate that he had lost a March Madness wager. After all, the Longhorns men’s basketball team defeated Colorado State in the first round of the ongoing NCAA Tournament, and as an alum of rival Texas Tech, Mahomes would have a rooting interest in seeing Texas lose.
But as Paige Buchele revealed on her Instagram page, Mahomes’ costume decision may not have been the result of any wager.

‘What’s crazyyy is that there wasn’t even a bet,’ Buchele wrote. ‘This was all him!!’
Texas did beat Colorado State, 56-44, to advance to a second-round matchup with Tennessee on Saturday in Charlotte.
Meanwhile, Mahomes’ team, Texas Tech, fell to a hot North Carolina State team in the first round, meaning the Red Raiders will be watching the tournament from Lubbock, Texas as the Longhorns advance.
Shane Buechele recently left Kansas City for Buffalo, where he will serve as Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s backup.
But before he left for the rival Bills, Buechele, Mahomes and their wives all attended an NWSL game together in Kansas City.
The Kansas City Current, a relatively new NWSL team owned, in part, by Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, beat the Portland Thorn, 5-4, in their first game at CPKC Stadium.
‘BIG @kccurrent fans,’ Paige Buechele wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the two couples.
