Taylor Swift fans caused an earthquake at one of the six shows in California. A study from Caltech and UCLA monitored how much the ground was shaking during her Eras Tour
Taylor Swift’s fanbase goes so hard, they almost caused an earthquake, literally.
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) did a study and monitored how much the ground shakes during Taylor’s show in California at SoFi stadium on August 5, 2023. Swifties did in fact, shake it off. Gabrielle Tepp, Igor Stubailo, Monica Kohler, Richard Guy and Yousef Bozorgnia are the brains behind the study. The data shows that during her Eras Tour show, they noticed seismic activity.

They monitored each song from the 3.5 hour playlist with an arena filled with 70,000 fans. They monitored with remote stations that were around 5.6 miles from SoFi. The seismic stations captured the dancing and jumping from the fans. According to TMZ, Gabrielle said that when the artist performed Shake It Off, it reached the “highest point” with a peak magnitude of 0.851. Gabrielle also stated that Taylor’s Love Story performance was also up there. The fans movements equated to a magnitude-2 earthquake.
Taylor recently released the Eras Tour film in theaters on October 13, 2023. The film gave fans a chance to experience the sold-out tour from a movie theater and the comfort of their homes. Disney+ also released the film version to stream. The Eras Tour is the singer’s sixth concert tour, consisting of 152 shows across the world. It began on March 17, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona and is set to conclude on December 8, 2024 in Vancouver, Canada.

Her upcoming shows could cause more commotion once her new album, Tortured Poets Department, releases on April 19. She made the announcement in February after winning Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammy Awards. Some believe the new album is about her ex-boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn.
The title, The Tortured Poets Department, may be a direct reference to a group chat that Joe publicly stated he was involved in, The Tortured Man Club. An insider told the Daily Mail that if it is a “diss album,” Joe would find it “shady” since he has been quiet about their breakup. The source said: “Regardless of what she does, he will still not respond because he has removed himself from her narrative and is very glad, he did.”
