Highest paid in La Liga – Real Madrid defender’s salary comes as shock

French publication L’Equipe has recently published a comprehensive report on the salaries of top footballers in Europe.

The major highlight of the report is the salary of Kylian Mbappe, which stands at around €6 million per month, thrice as much as the second-highest-paid player in Europe – Harry Kane of Bayern Munich.

David Alaba: Highest-paid player in La Liga

However, another key takeaway from the L’Equipe report (h/t Mundo Deportivo) is the salary of David Alaba. The Austrian international is one of the very few players in Europe earning more than €1 million per month.

To be exact, Alaba earns a whopping €1.88 million per month – making him not only Real Madrid’s highest-earner but also the highest-paid player in La Liga.

This is certainly a surprising outcome considering the fact that Real Madrid boast of other star players such as Toni Kroos, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham – players who have made much more impact at Santiago Bernabeu in recent years.

Formerly of Bayern Munich, Alaba joined Real Madrid in 2022. But his time at the Bernabeu has been marred by injuries, which has led to question marks over his future.

Will it stay this way?

Real Madrid’s salary structure is set for a major shuffle in the coming summer, especially with Kylian Mbappe joining the team.

The Frenchman will not be able to earn the €6 million per month salary at Real Madrid. But he will earn a hefty package – reportedly the same as Jude Bellingham and Vinicius.

As for Alaba, his future at Bernabeu remains uncertain. The Austrian is still out injured and won’t be returning to action anytime soon. This might just make things more difficult for Real Madrid to find a suitor for him this summer.

But if the numbers from L’Equipe do stand true, there is a very good chance Alaba will continue to be Real Madrid’s highest earner next season as well.
