Thibaut Courtois to undergo surgery after latest injury; could be out for seven weeks

Earlier today, Real Madrid were dealt yet another injury blow as Thibaut Courtois, on the road to recovery from his ACL rupture, suffered a fresh knee injury.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper, who has not played even once this season, was on his way to return at the end of the month after the international break.

However, the goalkeeper suffered from a torn meniscus in his right knee during training today, leaving the pitch in tears.

Early signs indicated a serious injury after he felt a ‘crack’ while training, but scans showed that the issue was not as grave as initially feared.

However, now, Mario Cortegana reports that Courtois will be undergoing surgery to address his latest knee injury.

The good news is that the procedure will not be as complicated as the one he underwent last year to treat his ACL rupture.

The operation will be carried out more with the purpose of cleaning the affected area, the report adds.

“He had his meniscus stitched then [in 2015] and the suture (row of stitches) has now ruptured,” a source close to the player said to The Athletic.

More details are expected in the days to come, although as things stand, Courtois’ season is as good as over.

The report suggests that the Belgian shot-stopper could be sidelined for seven weeks, meaning he could recover towards the start of May.

Real Madrid play their final La Liga game on May 26 while the UEFA Champions League final is scheduled to be played on June 1.

So, it remains to be seen whether Los Blancos consider having Courtois back in the final phase of the season or let him recover and prepare for the next season.
