Michelle Yeoh stepped in on Monday to clear up an awkward miscommunication when she presented Emma Stone with her Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday.
The 61-year-old Malaysian actress, who was the previous Best Actress winner in 2023 for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, confused viewers and audience members when she appeared to be unwilling to let go of the statuette.
The Oscars broadcast appeared to show Emma looking confused and miffed as she tried to take her award from Michelle, though the veteran star didn’t let go.
But the Hong Kong action film legend clarified on Instagram that she was actually trying to get the 35-year-old actress’ good friend Jennifer Lawrence in on the action.
‘Congratulations Emma!! I confused you , but I wanted to share that glorious moment of handing over Oscar to you together with your best friend Jennifer!!’ she explained in her caption.

Yeoh, 65, explained that she didn’t hand over the Oscar immediately because she wanted Emma’s good friend Jennifer Lawrence to be involved
She added that the 33-year-old Silver Linings Playbook actress ‘reminded me of my Bae Jamie Lee Curtis ♥️✨ always there for each other!!’
Jamie costarred with Michelle in her blockbuster indie sci-fi dramedy Everything Everywhere All At Once, and she also won her first Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for the film.
When Emma’s name was called — which shocked some viewers, as Killers Of The Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone had been considered the frontrunner after winning more prior awards — she hilariously turned around to reveal to the presenters and former winners that the back of her dress had ripped earlier in the evening.
But as she walked toward Michelle, who was the most recent winner and held the Oscar statuette, Emma reached out to grab it, but Michelle didn’t let go.
Emma seemed to have a confused look on her face as she and the action star continued walking together toward Jennifer, before Michelle let go and Emma was able to hug her friend.
Michelle included photos of her joyously presenting the award to Emma with Jennifer joining them, as well as a sweet photo of just her and Emma hugging.
A follow-up snap showed Emma surrounded by Michelle, Jennifer and the other three presenters, Jessica Lange, Charlize Theron and Sally Field.
If Emma was confused or upset, she didn’t betray it at all during her acceptance speech.

Some viewers were shocked when Emma beat out apparent frontrunner Lily Gladstone, but she and the Killers Of The Flower Moon actress have been ‘fast friends’ since the start of awards season; seen together at the Oscars with fellow nominee Annette Bening
After hilarious revealing her dress mishap to the audience, Emma fought back tears as she praised Lily, whom she had become ‘fast friends’ with during awards season.
The two were seen looking chummy during a commercial break, and they joined up with fellow Best Actress nominee Annette Bening for a group hug.
Emma’s film Poor Things, which she also produced, ended up winning four of its 11 nominations, with additional wins for production design, makeup and hairstyling and costume design.
The evening’s big winner was Oppenheimer, which won seven of its 13 nominations, including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Picture.
