Mahomes has his eye on a receiver prospect in the NFL Draft
What Patrick Mahomes wants, Patrick Mahomes gets…or does he?
The Kansas City Chiefs‘ superstar quarterback, the most important piece of their dynasty, has a voice that carries around the organization. The desire to keep Mahomes happy has informed some of Kansas City‘s personnel moves in recent seasons — and a tweet sent by the 28-year-old on Saturday has been interpreted by some as a ploy ahead of next month’s NFL Draft.

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine ended on Sunday, but it was a record-setting event this year in Indianapolis. Most notably, Texas Longhorns wide receiver Xavier Worthy shattered the mark for fastest 40-yard dash when he officially completed the drill in 4.21 seconds. His first try lasted 4.25 seconds, which prompted Mahomes to express his amazement in a brief post on X (formerly Twitter).

Worthy has been projected as a “bubble” pick, between the first and second rounds of the 2024 draft. The blazing speed he demonstrated at the Combine could tip the scales and make him a first-round selection in Detroit — and Mahomes’ Chiefs own the final pick of the opening round.

It is no secret that the Chiefs need an upgrade or two at the wide receiver position. Kansas City recently released Marquez Valdes-Scantling to free up $12 million in salary cap space, while Kadarius Toney is not expected to return in 2024 following late-season controversies. Outside of tight end Travis Kelce, Mahomes’ most reliable pass-catchers are Rashee Rice and Justin Watson — meaning another young upgrade at the position would be welcome.

Worthy is not assured of being on the board at 32nd overall, when Kansas City will make its first selection of the draft. But if Mahomes wants to play with the Texas speedster, it may be worth it to owner Clark Hunt and general manager Brett Veach to trade assets for a move up the draft order.
