TikTok trend reveals makeup tips based on ‘visual face weight’.

Forget applying your make-up according to the shape of your face – a new TikTok trend insists it’s your features’ ‘visual weight’ that matters most.

Forgoing the traditional heart, diamond, square or oval shapes, the concept insists you’ll look your best if you find out whether you have a high or low ‘visual weight’ face.

Those with a high ‘visual weight’ like British singer Dua Lipa and Angelina Jolie should adopt contouring, avoid bronzer, overline their lips and opt for dark eyeshadows on their eyelids.

In contrast, if you boast a low ‘visual weight’ face like Bridgerton stars Phoebe Dynevor and Simone Ashley, then ditch the contouring for blush and bronzer and a beige lip colour.

The idea is that low ‘visual weight’ faces are best suited to more natural looking makeup, while high ‘visual weight’ features can embrace a bolder look with their cosmetics.

Working out if you have one or the other depends on the distinctiveness of your bone structure and the size of your facial features.

High ‘visual weight’ refers to people who have more prominent features that really capture attention, such as big eyes and lips and high cheekbones.

Low ‘visual weight’, meanwhile, suggests you have features that are softer, like Hailey Bieber, whose features such as her nose, cheeks and lips aren’t hugely noticeable compared to the rest of her face.

TiTokers across the UK and US have suggested that high ‘visual weight’ faces can easily pull off glamorous makeup looks.

Those with the opposite ‘visual weight’ should instead stick to subtler looks, such as a ‘clean girl’ vibe. This involves a pink blush and nude lip, for instance.

One TikToker (helloitsjessicaa) explained: ‘Everyone is talking about high or low visual weight, so what is it? And how can it help you glow up and change your makeup game in 2024?

‘So understanding what your ‘visual weight’ is, is going to give you a clear way to understand what style is going to best suit your features.

‘Do you have a big face with small features or small face with big features? Do you have a high nose bridge from the side or do you have a lower nose bridge from the side?

‘You can also try to take a selfie and turn it to black and white. I like to use the mono option.

‘Screenshot this and on one of the selfies put the contrast to negative 100 and on the other selfie put it to positive 100. If your features are more clear in low contrast, you’re probably are a low visual weight.

‘And if they are more clear in high contrast, you could be a high visual weight. But this is not 100 per cent accurate.

‘If you have lower visual weight, you’re going to want to stick to more muted and less vibrant makeup tones to increase the visual presence of your features.

‘With high visual weight, you’re either going to want to enhance the well defined features you already have or create a more warm impression. Try to use a deep red lipstick, not a vibrant orange one.’

The TikToker continued: ‘If you’re still confused, if you are high or low visual weight, I recommend just doing your makeup both ways and see which one you like better.

‘Because at the end of the day, don’t look too much into it. Just do your makeup however you likeand whatever style you feel most confident in.’ x

Makeup expert Laura Kay insisted that it’s ‘essential to consider how these techniques can be utilised to create a balanced and harmonious overall makeup look’.

She told FEMAIL: ‘By tailoring high and low visual weight techniques to each facial section, you can create a cohesive and well-balanced makeup look that enhances your features effectively.

‘For the eyes, high visual weight may involve using vibrant and intense eyeshadow colours, dramatic eyeliner shapes, and bold mascara to draw attention and create a focal point.

‘In contrast, low visual weight for the eyes would focus on softer, neutral tones, subtle eyeliner styles, and natural-looking lashes for a more understated effect.

‘For the lips, high visual weight involves bold lip colours, gloss finishes, and defined lip contours/lines to make a statement.

‘Meanwhile, low visual weight would feature muted lip shades, matte textures, and blended lip products for a more subtle and natural appearance.

‘For the cheeks, high visual weight might include intense blush application and strategic highlighting to emphasise cheekbones.

‘Keeping the contour or highlight high and sharp. The overall look with your concealer will look more angular.

‘On the other hand, low visual weight cheeks would involve a lighter hand with blush application, bronzer with a natural flush, and minimal highlighting for a softer glow. Keeping the application to the centre of the cheek.’
