A huge repair job is underway at the MCG after Taylor Swift‘s world tour hit Melbourne.
The American superstar played three gigs at the 100,000-seat stadium in Australia last week, which saw close to 300,000 fans visit the venue and footage has shown the detrimental impact it has had to the turf.
The new AFL season begins next month, but MCG bosses are well-equipped to deal with big resurfacing jobs – having relaid the turf just 13 days out from the start of the 2023 season after back-to-back Ed Sheeran concerts.
‘With just under four weeks until the first AFL game of season 2024, our turf team have been preparing for the arena’s renovation for the last 18 months,’ Melbourne Cricket Club boss Stuart Fox told News Corp.

‘The team has a proven track record in managing significant and successful turf renovations which was evident after last year’s two Ed Sheeran concerts where we faced tighter deadlines to be ready for the AFL season.
‘Although we need to replace two-thirds of the turf, the absence of events scheduled after the three Taylor Swift concerts provides us with a more generous window for turnaround time.
‘Our turf rolls, boasting a depth of around 10cm, are practically immovable once laid down. With the combination of our skilled team, months of preparation and advanced technology, I have full confidence that the hallowed turf will be to the elite standards expected of us by mid-March.’
According to Channel Seven, it will likely take 12 days to fully replace the grass.
The first game of the season to take place at the MCG will be played on Thursday night of round one, which is just over three weeks away.
P!nk is also performing at Marvel Stadium on March 12 and 13, meaning a quick turnaround is needed for the first AFL game at the venue on March 29.
