Skip Bayless asserts that only a specific quarterback has the capability to halt Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ reign of dominance.

Joe Burrow has a 3-1 career record against Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are on top of the football world once again. The Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday night, defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The 25-22 victory confirmed Kansas City as the NFL‘s newest dynasty — and one could argue that no other team is truly in a position to slow down the Chiefs in the foreseeable future.

Skip Bayless is not one of those people. The controversial Fox Sports television personality believes there is one quarterback out there who is more than capable of halting the Kansas City dynasty next season — and he will enter the 2024 NFL season with a chip on his shoulder.

Patrick Mahomes and family celebrate Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII win on the fieldInstagramBayless: Burrow has Mahomes’ number

On Monday’s episode of the popular sports talk show “Undisputed,” Bayless made the claim that Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals have the best shot to wrestle control of the AFC away from MahomesTravis Kelce, and the rest of the Chiefs. Bayless highlighted Burrow’s 3-1 career record against Mahomes — including an AFC Championship Game win during the 2021 season — as evidence that once healthy, Burrow will remind everyone just how good he is.

“Just the same way that Mahomes has had San Francisco‘s number, because he’s now 4-0 (against them), Joe Burrow has had Mahomes’ number,” Bayless said. “And it doesn’t matter to me who you get. As long as he’s got Ja’Marr Chase, they are serious business.”

The Bengals‘ 2023 season appeared doomed from the start, when Burrow suffered a calf strain in training camp and played through the pain before he sustained a season-ending ligament tear in his right wrist. Burrow played only 10 games in 2023 and threw 15 touchdowns against six interceptions — and while the Bengals had a winning record without him, they missed the playoffs and finished last in the AFC North despite finishing 9-8.

“He is capable of going into Arrowhead and winning, because I saw him do it in an AFC Championship Game,” Bayless said about Burrow. “He’s capable of going up to Josh Allen and winning, because I saw him do it in a playoff game.”

Will the Chiefs and the Bengals meet in 2024?

As it turns out, the Chiefs and the Bengals will meet in regular season action during the 2024 season — although the date is not yet known. What is certain though is that Kansas City will host the game at Arrowhead Stadium, which — as it stands — will be the fifth all-time meeting between Mahomes and Burrow.

If Burrow and superstar receiver Chase both remain upright next season, oddsmakers favor Cincinnati to return to winning ways. According to BetMGM, the Bengals are +1400 to win their first-ever Super Bowl next season — the sixth-highest odds in the entire NFL, but behind the Chiefs, Allen‘s Bills, and MVP Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens in the stacked AFC.
