Margot Robbie has broken her silence on Barbie director Greta Gerwig’s controversial Oscars snub, days after the filmmaker failed to receive a nomination in the directing category.
Speaking at a Q&A hosted by the Academy Museum on Tuesday, Robbie said Greta ‘should’ have been nominated.
‘Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films,’ she said.
Both Robbie, 33, and Gerwig, 40, were shockingly snubbed for individual Oscar nominations, despite the film receiving eight other nods – including Best Supporting Actor for the actor who played Barbie’s sidekick Ken, Ryan Gosling, a Best Supporting Actress nod for America Ferrera, and the Best Picture nomination.
Many believed Robbie deserved a nomination for Best Actress and Greta for Best Director.

Robbie did not address her own Oscars snub but emphasized they were ‘beyond ecstatic’ the film had achieved eight Oscar nominations.
‘We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that, and some, like way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.
‘I’m so, so obviously ecstatic. Everyone getting the nods that they have is incredible and the Best Picture nod.’
She added of the whole controversy, ‘There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.’
Margot attended the Q&A and special screening of Barbie with Gosling in what marked her first public appearance since the snubbing.
The film museum was constructed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who dish out the annual Academy Awards.
Both Margot and Barbie’s director Greta were snubbed by the Academy when they announced their 2024 Oscar nominations last week.
Despite the snub, professional Margot looked in good spirits as she answered questions alongside Ryan and their co-stars Rhea Perlman, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt and Kate McKinnon.
Margot, who also produced the movie, repped the film with her Barbie t-shirt and bright pink heels, which she teamed with jeans and a blazer.

While Margot and Greta were snubbed by the Academy, Ryan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken.
The actor slammed the Academy for overlooking his female colleagues in a statement, but fell short of giving up his nomination in protest.
And according to a source close to the Hollywood A-lister, he has no plans to do so. Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com, the insider said: ‘Ryan is sticking by his statement.
‘He understands people are upset because he is upset as well, but he is not going to be swayed by what anyone is saying online.’
They continued: ‘Ryan is honored that he has been nominated and the film has been nominated.
‘In the chance he does win or if he performs I’m Just Ken, he will honor Margot and Greta in one way or another.’
According to the source, Ryan is doing what is right for his heart, and he has the support of his cast and director.

‘He is not looking to make this into something more than it has become. He spoke about it and people should take what he said seriously because he meant every single word,’ the insider said.
Ryan issued a statement addressing Greta and Margot’s snubs shortly after the Oscar nominations were announced.
He began his statement by expressing gratitude for his nomination, stating: ‘I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films.’
‘And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.’
The actor then went on to share his disappointment at Margot and Greta not being nominated, before praising them for their work on the film.
‘Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history,’ he added.
