Widow’s Long Walk

We’ve watched Natasha Romanoff repeatedly save the world (and her male Avenger comrades) for 10 years now — but like all good spies, she’s still concealing a few secrets. Now the former Russian agent finally gives us an unredacted peek into her ledger with the long-awaited solo Black Widow film.

To celebrate 10 years of Widow, EW photographed Scarlett Johansson for our April cover — and assembled a few exclusive stills from the upcoming movie.

The solo Black Widow film is set in the turmoil between the Avengers’ breakup in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and their reunion in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

“I thought it was interesting to explore this part of her life before she rejoins the Avengers, before she makes that ultimate sacrifice,” Johansson tells EW. “How does she become this full person from all these broken pieces?”“I think this character’s strength really lies in her vulnerability and her acceptance of that,” Johansson says. “She has emotional intelligence that has allowed her to survive without any real superpowers.”

“This film is very much a result of that journey, my own personal journey,” Johansson says of her 10-year run as Black Widow. “I feel that I probably wasn’t as willing or able to go to the kind of uncomfortable, embarrassing, ugly places before. I think it’s just as you get older, you trust yourself more.”

Like Natasha, Pugh’s Yelena trained in the Red Room — and has the assassin skills to match.

The film follows Natasha as she reunites with the only kin she’s ever had: a hodgepodge band of Russian spies who went undercover together as a family when Natasha was a child — including Rachel Weisz’s Melina and Florence Pugh’s Yelena.
