The Pittsburgh Steelers are aware that a significant decision on the future of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields must be made soon.

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II knows the team must make a decision sooner rather than later when it comes to their quarterback problem after another disappointing season.

With the Steelers having last won a playoff game eight years ago, their longest playoff drought since 1972, Rooney spoke about the importance of figuring out the quarterback position in order to get the franchise back on track at his annual season-ending press conference.

“I think both of them see themselves as starters and I don’t know that they want to share the job again,” Rooney said. “So I would say most likely we don’t wind up bringing them both back.

The Steelers brought in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in separate trades with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears last offseason.

Fields appeared in 10 games last season and finished with 1,106 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 289 yards and reached the endzone five times.

As for Wilson, he finished with 2,482 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in 11 appearances. He also added another two touchdowns on 11 carries for 43 yards.

With neither player grabbing hold of the position last season and the Steelers failing to find success, Rooney wouldn’t commit to bringing back either player and stated that taking the next step is the team’s ultimate goal.

“It’s not what we expected, especially after getting off to a good start,” Rooney said. “So we have a lot of work to do to improve going into next season. We just have to keep building a stronger roster.
