Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson chat about his childhood as his new series Young Rock debuted on NBC Tuesday.
‘My life was incredibly complicated and it was incredibly tough growing up,’ the 48-year-old superstar told the The Sun Tuesday.
The show depicts the upbringing of the wrestler-turned-actor with his father, late pro wrestler Rocky Johnson, and mom Ata Maivia, through the ups and downs of his childhood in the 1980s and early 90s.

‘Thirteen is when I started to veer off the tracks,’ Johnson told the outlet. ‘I started getting arrested for fighting, theft, all kinds of stupid [stuff] that I shouldn’t have been doing.’
Johnson described the crimes he and friends would commit, as parts of his phase is documented on the series.
‘We would target the money, we would target the high-end clothes and we would target the jewelry – turn around and sell it,’ said Johnson, who parlayed his WWE fame into an A-list Hollywood career.
The Ballers star described himself to the outlet as ‘a kid who had some anger issues but also thought he was really cool.’

Johnson said he ‘clearly had an identity crisis’ as he was growing up.
‘I didn’t want to be known as Dwayne when I moved from high school to high school. I called myself Tomas.
‘Girls used to call the house and ask for Tomas and my mom would go, “I’m sorry. There’s no Tomas here.”‘
The series also depicts his dad’s career as a professional wrestler in the territory systems of the 1970s and 80s, before Vince McMahon and Wrestlemania brought a high-profile toward the form of entertainment.

The Rock is portrayed by three actors on the retro series: Adrian Groulx at the age of 10, Bradley Constant in his high school years, and Uli Latukefu from the ages 18 to 20.
Young Rock airs Tuesdays on NBC at 8/7c.
