Give credit to Russell Wilson. He had plenty of incentive to simply mail in the remainder of his NFL career. He has nine Pro Bowl selections, a Super Bowl ring, nearly 45,000 career passing yards–18th all-time–and a ticket to the Pro Football Hall of Fame that has all but already been punched.
Wilson is also still collecting on the $242 million contract he signed with the Broncos two years ago, and he’s married to renowned singer Ciara. He really did not need to go to Pittsburgh and prove anything on a veteran minimum contract.
Yet, Wilson has done just that, winning his first four starts with the Steelers before the team’s upset loss to the Browns in the snow last Thursday. He has thrown for 1,212 yards and seven touchdowns with just two interceptions in five games, for a quarterback rating of 98.6.

His Pro Football Focus grade of 75.5 is good for 18th in the NFL among quarterbacks.
This week, Wilson seemed to show his appreciation of his opportunity with the Steelers, as he went on Instagram and sent a message to coach Mike Tomlin. Captioning a photo of he and Tomlin celebrating with a slap of hands, Wilson wrote, “WE built different.”

The photo was liked by Tomlin’s Instagram account.
Tomlin faced some criticism early in the season when he replaced starter Justin Fields, who had gone 4-2 in the role, with Wilson once Wilson returned from a calf injury. But Tomlin has had WIlson’s back all along.
“I think he’s still writing that story,” Tomlin said earlier this month. “To be quite honest with you, there were myriad reasons why I had the posture that I had; his resume being a component of it, his experience. And I thought his experience could be an asset to our unit and our team. And that’s played out. His talents. His appetite for big moments, and I think that’s played out some.
“There’s a myriad of reasons and I think it will be continually revealed because of the circumstances that he and we will be in. I’m excited about facing those things with him. I’m excited about him, quite frankly, getting better.”
