What Are Cave Pearls?

Their formation begins with slightly acidic water dissolving limestone, the predominant mineral in most caves. This calcium-rich water drips into shallow cave pools, creating the perfect environment for these pearls to form. The process starts with a small nucleus, often a grain of sand or organic debris, around which calcite layers build. Over time, with continuous water movement ensuring even deposition, a gleaming, spherical pearl takes shape. However, cave pearls are not always perfect spheres; they can also take cylindrical, elliptical, or even cubical shapes, with sizes ranging from tiny grains to golf balls.
