It’s not been the start to the season the Manchester United hierarchy would have hoped for when they decided to back Erik ten Hag in the summer.
The Dutchman looked set to leave Old Trafford as Ineos sounded out a number of potential replacements. However, FA Cup final success over Manchester City meant he was handed another chance – a decision that is yet to be justified.
United have won just three of their opening 11 games in all competitions and they currently sit 14th in the Premier League with a goal difference of -3.
Perhaps the most harrowing part of it all is that Ten Hag hasn’t been far off being able to call upon his best starting XI over the past few weeks. The treatment room at Carrington is far from empty but we’re nowhere near the injury crises of last season.
That said, a number of players could soon be available who would definitely take their place in United’s best matchday squad.
Luke Shaw hasn’t featured for United since February but a return could soon be on the cards after Ten Hag suggested he would be available shortly after the October international break. Fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia is also stepping up his recovery having not played for the club in well over a year.
Leny Yoro is yet to make his competitive debut for United after suffering a fractured metatarsal in the opening game of their pre-season tour of the United States. He posted a video of himself on a treadmill on Wednesday and could be just a few weeks away from a return should his rehabilitation go to plan.
Mason Mount has endured a torrid time with injuries since his move to United last summer. He missed United’s last two matches after being forced off with a head injury against Tottenham Hotspur just under a fortnight ago. Ten Hag hasn’t given an expected return date but it’s hoped the international break will allow him time to recover before making his return to the squad.
