Ivan Toney has finalised a deal to join Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli, concluding a year-long transfer saga which saw the striker regularly linked with Manchester United.
Brentford will pocket a £40million fee for the forward, who is set to ink a four-year contract with his new squad. The combined cost of the fee and his salary will total a £100m move.
Toney has been pushing for a transfer away from the Bees for a significant part of the past year. The England international had his heart set on a move to stay in the Premier League, waiting on approaches from United or Arsenal, reports the Mirror.
However, neither club showed serious interest in the 28-year-old, who represented the Three Lions at Euro 2024 over the summer. Brentford manager Thomas Frank has excluded Toney from both of his matchday squads so far this season.
Ahead of his team’s defeat to Liverpool last Saturday, Frank conceded that Toney’s future was uncertain. Despite Toney’s stand-in Igor Thiago suffering a severe injury in pre-season, the Bees boss acknowledged Toney was on his way out.
“Ivan trained the whole week,” Frank stated. “Trained with a good attitude in every aspect. He could be involved, he could not be involved.”
“He could be here after August 30 and he could not be here. Basically, everything is up in the air. I’ve said the whole time that if he’s here I’m very happy, if he’s not here then I’m happy on his behalf. Who knows, let’s see, let’s see what will happen.”
Toney also missed Wednesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Colchester United, a match where several key players were rested. Post-match, Frank remained tight-lipped about Toney’s future, which appears to have reached a resolution.
“Similar stand to yesterday. I am not speaking about Ivan,” Frank stated firmly. “I want to speak about the 21 lads in the dressing room who did well to get through to the next round of the Carabao Cup against a Colchester team who deserve a lot of praise and made it difficult for us.”
Toney’s switch to Al-Ahli follows the Saudi attempts to sign Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who has his sights set on a move to Chelsea, prompting Al-Ahli to turn their attention to Toney as a secondary option. But it is claimed the club could sign both strikers, with a few also agreed for Osimhen.
United have sealed deals for Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkee, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui this summer, with Manuel Ugarte set to become the fifth signing on deadline day. The transfer window closes at 11pm.
