Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea star Cole Palmer could join Manchester United next season if the Blues endure a poor campaign under Enzo Maresca.

Maresca’s team lost their opening Premier League fixture of the new season, 2-0 at home to Manchester City last weekend. Chelsea managed to bounce back impressively on Sunday though with a 6-2 win at Wolves, which saw Palmer grab his first goal of the 2024/25 campaign.

And Liverpool legend Carragher has offered his view on what could happen to the England and Chelsea star if his current club go on to have another bad season. The west London club finished sixth in 23/24 and failed to win a trophy, with Mauricio Pochettino departing after a chaotic campaign.

“Something’s just come to me here. If Chelsea have another poor season, we were talking earlier about Manchester United having a real problem on that right wing,” Carragher told The Overlap.

“He [Palmer] is a big Man United fan isn’t he? Would that not be something that United should visit maybe in 12 months if it doesn’t go well? You know what, I think that could happen. Yeah, Cole Palmer to Man United.”

The England international rose through Manchester City’s academy and went on to win seven major trophies at senior level as part of Pep Guardiola’s team. But the versatile attacker left the Etihad last summer to pursue more first-team opportunities.

Palmer arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer from City in a £42.5million move. The 22-year-old has gone on to become a Premier League star, having scored 26 goals in all competitions for the Blues since making his Chelsea debut against Nottingham Forest in September 2023.
