Logan Sargeant’s Williams F1 exit looms near as multiple teams contact the American driver for an IndyCar Drive

Logan Sargeant is reported to be interested in making his way to IndyCar as uncertainty looms over his F1 career with Williams. He is currently running in his second season and is yet to score a point this year.

Sargeant made his full-time F1 debut with Williams in the 2023 season, replacing Nicholas Latifi. While he was expected to help the team get into a better shape alongside teammate Alex Albon, the American driver has not contributed a lot.

Throughout the 2023 season, Logan Sargeant scored one point (in COTA, after Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified from the race). Meanwhile, Albon had managed to pull in 27 points and carried the team for most of the season. In 2024 as well, Sargeant seems to be following the same trend, with no points scored so far.

His future in the sport is currently uncertain. According to motorsports journalist Marshall Pruett, Sargeant is looking to race in the American IndyCar series. Pruett wrote in his Racer column:

“Of the many who I’ve asked, two IndyCar teams (who did not want to be identified) told me they’ve been contacted by and spoken with a representative for Sargeant, and both said the same thing: The Williams driver is interested in IndyCar or sports cars, and wants to be paid to drive.”

Williams team principal James Vowles also hinted towards a mid-season driver swap while analyzing Sargeant’s performance earlier.

“There will be a line in the sand” – Williams boss hints at Logan Sargeant’s swap

James Vowles earlier analyzed Logan Sargeant’s performance in contrast to his teammate Alex Albon. He also revealed that he wants the 23-year-old to perform at the same level as Albon. He told Sky Sports:

“Logan all the way through has been provided [with] the opportunity to retain his seat – that’s in his control. I need performance that’s at Alex’s level, I need him to be there day in and day out, fundamentally.”

Vowles later added that although he wants to give Sargeant all the opportunities, there might come a point when the team thinks about other options.

“He knows that, he wants to perform, he wants to be there, and I want to give him every opportunity he can. There will be a line in the sand where we have to make a decision and at that point, both for 2025 and maybe for something this year, we’ll make a decision on it, but we’re not there today.”

Williams has remained within the bottom five teams for the past couple of seasons now. They faced more issues with outdated technology, an underperforming car, and managerial turmoil. While the team has progressed since Vowles’s move from Mercedes as the team principal for the Grove-based team, there is still a long way to go to achieve consistently good performances.
