Tom Petty’s Long-Term Malibu Residence Is Up for Auction for $19 Million

Tom Petty, the late rock star, lived in a Mediterranean-style Malibu villa for many years. It is being listed for $19 million.

Listing agent Pamela Van Ierland, a Coldwell Banker Realty agent connected to the Malibu office and a close friend of Petty and his spouse Dana, stated, “He loved that house, it was a sanctuary.” “There was always music, laughter, and love in it.”

Van Ierland, who had pleasant recollections of the house from Christmas and Thanksgiving parties to “Tommy showing my daughter how to play ‘Free Fallin’ on the harmonica” and hangouts with the Heartbreakers, stated that the couple purchased the property in 1998.

In contrast to several high-profile Malibu property owners, Petty chose a place a little bit further from the shore. Van Ierland stated, “I knew them when they bought it, and he said, ‘I don’t want to fall into the ocean 25 years from now.'” “Tunity was what Dana and Tommy desired; they couldn’t care less about the views.”

She added that even though this house is in the center of Malibu, it feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere.

The 10,000 square foot property has a ton of character, from the deep dark wood floors and bathrooms with Spanish tiles to the vintage chandeliers and sconces.

A formal great room boasts a grand fireplace beneath hand-carved skylight covers—a personal touch from Petty, said Van Ierland, who will be bringing the home to the market in the next few weeks.

There’s also a wood-paneled library and TV room; a music room; a chef’s kitchen with an adjacent butler’s pantry; a gym and massage room; and a formal dining room with seating for 16.

There are seven bedrooms across the property, including the primary suite, which is a “beautiful space,” Van Ierland said, and has French doors leading to an enclosed courtyard, and a massive closet. “I’ve never seen a man with so many Western flannel jammies in my life,” she added.

Nestled on roughly 2.6 acres, the grounds are lush with flat lawns, fountains, ponds, waterfalls and a pool.

There’s also a separate one-bedroom guesthouse, and, of course, the studio, which Petty converted from another guest house. Fitted with a living room, bathroom, rehearsal rooms and recording studios, the space, where Petty wrote plenty of music, could be repurposed as a screening room, a game room or converted back into guest accommodations.

Van Ierland described it as “truly a magical estate, owned by an amazing man who left the world way too soon.” “I want the person who purchases it to feel a connection to him and his music.” It’s brimming with memories.

In addition to being the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, one of the all-time best-selling musicians, Petty has enjoyed success as a solo artist.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in December 2001.

At the age of 66, Petty passed away in 2017.
