Sergio Perez seat no longer secure as the Mexican told to improve form by Red Bull

Sergio Perez has reportedly been told to improve his on-track performance by Red Bull otherwise he could be replaced before the end of the 2024 F1 season. This was reported after his poor performance at the British GP qualifying session, where he only managed to secure P19.

While Sergio Perez started off the 2024 F1 season on a high, his performance plummeted after the Miami GP. From Imola to Austrian GP, the Mexican was only able to score 15 points. In comparison, his Red Bull teammate, Max Verstappen, scored 101 points.

His performance was questioned even more because he recently extended his contract with Red Bull till 2026 and beyond.

As per a recent report from RacingNews365, Sergio Perez’s contract has a performance clause that asks him to deliver decent results before the summer break if he wants to keep his seat at Red Bull. If Checo fails to improve his performance by summer break in August, there is a chance that he could be removed from the defending world champion team.

According to the report, the clause includes being less than 100 points behind Max Verstappen. After the Austrian GP, Sergio Perez is 119 points behind his teammate.

Going into the 2024 F1 British GP, Sergio Perez starts the race from P19, while Max Verstappen starts from P4.

Sergio Perez frustrated after a poor qualifying session for the British GP

Sergio Perez had a horrendous qualifying session for the 2024 F1 British GP. During semi-wet conditions, the Mexican went out on track with slick soft tires. Since the tires were too cold and the conditions were still slippery, he was unable to control the car and went off into the gravel trap. Since he was unable to put in a decent lap time, he was out in Q1 and will start Sunday’s race from P19.

Speaking to F1.com after the qualifying session, he expressed his frustration and explained how the cold slick tires made it difficult to control the car.

“It’s very frustrating. I let my whole team down. I was the first one, or one of the first ones, to go onto slick tires and at that point, I basically needed all the temperature I could get to the tire,” Perez said.“As I was approaching Turn 9, I shifted down, I locked up the rear axle, which put me out of the track. I ended up trying to go to keep it straight, but I just lost the car. The tires were super-cold and I got caught out with the conditions,” he went on.

He said that he was helpless once he was in the gravel trap and failed to unleash the full potential of the car during qualifying.

“I was trying to get out, but once you’re there it’s really difficult to do anything. It’s very frustrating, it hurts to let your team down in that way, especially because we’ve had a really strong weekend up to now. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to show the full pace,” the Red Bull driver concluded.

After the Austrian GP, Sergio Perez is down in fifth place with 118 points, while Max Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship table with 237 points.
