Drake’s curse is still active as he loses $50,000 due to the Edmonton Oilers’ Stanley Cup loss.

The Oilers lost Game 7 after an incredible fight-back against the Florida Panthers

It was heartbreak in Game 7 for the Edmonton Oilers as the Stanley Cup evaded them after an unprecedented fightback from 3-0 down, but they weren’t the only ones to lose out as Drake lost over half a million dollars in bets, as the Canadian rapper’s sports curse rages on.

The iconic rap star staked around $500,000 on the Oilers to win the NHL season but the 2-1 loss in the final game ensured the pair missed out on return over a million dollars after betting on them at the start of the series.

Initially, the Oilers seemed to be on course to be swept as the Florida Panthers raced into a three-game lead before one of the most sensational sports stories of all-time threatened to unfold…

The Oilers fought back to 3-3 and stood on the verge of becoming just one of four teams to recover such a deficit in the playoffs and the second ever team to do it in the Stanley Cup Final to do so, and importantly, to survive Drake‘s curse.

But it wasn’t to be as the Panthers won Game 7 by the score of 2-1 thanks to goals from Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart at the Amerant Bank Arena in Florida to claim their first ever Stanley Cup, in the process denying the Oilers a sixth.

What is the Drake Curse?

Drake has a tendency to be rather unfortunate with who he backs to win, with the NHL series being the latest example of that in what is dubbed the Drake Curse: if he backs your team, forget about it.

Previously, the 37-year-old rapper backed the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA Finals (they lost to the Boston Celtics) and Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk, only for the undefeated heavyweight to suffer his first career loss.

According to his betting record, he’s lost over $1.5 million dollars in 2024 already, but with a net worth of approximately $250m, he won’t be struggling for his next meal anytime soon.
